Play Ball
I’ve never been a girlie girl.
I grew up on 3 wheelers (remember those?) uneven parallel bars, and horses. I was more at home at motorcycle races than afternoon teas.
I don’t think I ever wore pink.
I think I remember scoring touchdowns during the family football games at the ranch on Thanksgiving Day. I’m pretty sure it was because the boys all let me, the only girl, run by them.
But never-the-less, I remember being part of that once a year football game. It was on a lop-sided, dusty hill, just down from the barns that once held livestock but at the time were full of farming equipment.
Why the trip down memory lane, you ask?
Because my backyard, Thanksgiving Day football game was to the Superbowl what everyday in a CrossFit gym is to the CrossFit Games.
It seems that CrossFit has become all about the Games.
But the Games is the Superbowl. Once a year on a sparkly stage, a select few of the top people get to go out and compete to be number one.
It’s cool to watch and know that “hey, thrusters suck for them, too. I know what that feels like”.
But the truth is, CrossFit is way more of the backyard football game than the Superbowl.
Everyone can play. You don’t even have to be very good at it, you just have to try hard. You have to show up and take the ball and run toward your goal line. Sometimes your big brother will stop you. Sometimes, your dad will grab him so you can run by.
Everyday in a CrossFit gym it’s not about who wins the Games, it’s about who shows up with the ball.
Everyday in a CrossFit gym, it’s about what you can do to be better, stronger, healthier, and happier than you were yesterday.
What are you going to do in your CrossFit gym today?
